**Zurich, Switzerland (November 6, 2024):** The Swiss government has confirmed that the controversial ban on facial coverings in public spaces, commonly known as the “burqa ban,” will come into effect on January 1st, 2025. This decision follows a 2021 referendum where a narrow majority of Swiss voters supported the measure.
The ban, which was spearheaded by the same group responsible for a 2009 ban on new minarets, has been met with criticism from Muslim associations. Violators of the law will face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,144).
However, the government has clarified that the ban does not apply to airplanes, diplomatic and consular premises, or places of worship. Facial coverings will also be allowed for reasons of health and safety, cultural customs, weather conditions, artistic and entertainment purposes, and for advertising.
The government further stated that individuals requiring facial coverings for personal protection while exercising their freedom of expression and assembly will be permitted, provided they have obtained prior approval from the responsible authority and public order is not jeopardized.
