**KOCHI, November 6, 2024:** An Assistant Commissioner with the Kochi City Traffic Police, A.A. Ashraf, has been formally accused in a hit-and-run accident that occurred on Saturday evening in Puthenvelikkara. The incident, which took place amidst heavy rain, resulted in the injury of 78-year-old Francis, who sustained head injuries after being struck by a police vehicle.
The Puthenvelikkara police registered a case based on eyewitness accounts and booked Ashraf under Sections 281 (rash driving on a public road) and 125 (a) (acts that endanger personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accident occurred at 7:55 pm near the Keezhupadam church along the Mala-Elanthikkara Road.
The police, after initially investigating the accident as an unknown driver incident, later identified and arraigned the Assistant Commissioner. Investigations are ongoing to determine if speeding was a contributing factor to the accident.
