**New Delhi:** In a scathing editorial published in The Indian Express, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused a new breed of monopolists of controlling India’s governing institutions and regulators, leading to a decimation of businesses and rising inequality.
Gandhi likened the situation to the East India Company, stating that these groups have amassed colossal wealth at the expense of the majority, creating an unfair playing field for businesses and entrepreneurs. He alleged that these “match-fixing monopoly groups” have undermined the market forces and use their power to control media and public discourse.
“Hundreds of India’s brilliant and dynamic business leaders are scared of these monopolists,” Gandhi wrote, asserting that competing with them is akin to fighting against the machinery of the state. He pointed to examples like Mahindra, Titan, Lenskart, Manyavar, and Zomato as companies that have chosen to operate within the rules, while others are stifled by the power dynamics.
Gandhi further criticized the government for supporting “benami equations” in the business system, advocating for a level playing field for all businesses. He acknowledged that these monopolists are not inherently evil but are a product of societal and political failures.
This editorial reflects Gandhi’s ongoing criticism of the BJP government’s economic policies, which he claims have created a monopoly model that has hurt micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and led to job losses.
Gandhi’s statement has sparked debate about the state of India’s economy and the role of big corporations in shaping its future. The government is yet to respond to his allegations.
