**KUNMING, CHINA – November 4, 2024** – Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing will embark on a trip to China this week, marking his first visit to the influential neighbor since he seized power in a 2021 coup. The visit comes amidst a turbulent period for Myanmar, with widespread unrest and armed resistance against the military government.
Hlaing will participate in the Greater Mekong Subregion and Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) summits, as well as a meeting with Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam in Kunming from November 6-7, according to state media reports.
The visit, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and promoting economic development, comes at a time when China is increasingly concerned about the deteriorating situation in Myanmar. The escalating conflict has led to instability along the Myanmar-China border, forcing China to seal off parts of the border and restrict imports to rebel-controlled territories.
The junta’s leader is expected to meet with Chinese officials during his trip and discuss measures to address the ongoing conflict and its implications for regional stability.
