Wed Nov 06 12:06:27 UTC 2024: ## Leverkusen Faces “Best in Europe” Liverpool in Crucial Champions League Showdown

**Liverpool, England -** Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has described Liverpool as one of the “best, if not the best” teams in Europe ahead of their pivotal Champions League clash at Anfield on Tuesday.

The encounter promises to be a high-stakes battle, with both teams in stellar form. Liverpool currently leads Group C with a perfect nine points, topping both their Champions League group and the Premier League table. Leverkusen, meanwhile, sits sixth in the group with seven points from three games.

“For us, it is a big challenge,” Alonso said in a press conference. “They are showing that in the Premier League and Champions League. They have a good squad and a great coach.”

Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder who enjoyed a successful spell at the club from 2004 to 2009, winning the Champions League in 2005, acknowledged the daunting task ahead.

“You can play 70 minutes great, and in 20 minutes the game is gone, so mentally and emotionally we need to be ready,” he said. “In all areas, they are really strong, so the process works really well. The manager [Arne Slot] has done a fantastic job in three months.”

While the return to Anfield is sure to evoke memories for Alonso, he insists his focus is entirely on the game.

“Unfortunately, there is no time for tourism – maybe a little run or walk tomorrow,” he said. “I know the city very well; I love it, but tomorrow I will focus on the game and only the game.”

The match is crucial for both teams in their bid for a place in the knockout rounds. For Alonso, however, it represents a personal return to the place where he first made his mark in European football, adding another layer of intrigue to this highly anticipated clash.
