Tue Nov 05 19:15:58 UTC 2024: ## BRS Promises Support for Auto Drivers Impacted by Free Bus Scheme in Telangana

**Hyderabad, November 6, 2024:** The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has pledged to support autorickshaw drivers in Telangana whose livelihoods have been affected by the free bus travel scheme for women. The scheme, known as Mahalakshmi, offers free travel on Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses, leading to a significant decrease in autorickshaw passenger numbers.

BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, speaking at a protest organized by the autorickshaw drivers’ union in Hyderabad, acknowledged the impact of the free bus scheme. While expressing support for the initiative, he stated that the government should protect the interests of auto drivers by providing them with a monthly allowance of ₹5,000.

The union presented a 13-point list of demands, including the issuance of permits for 20,000 new autorickshaws in Hyderabad, ex-gratia payments for those who have lost their livelihoods, and the establishment of a welfare board for auto drivers. They also demanded an increase in the minimum fare on auto meters, citing rising fuel costs.

Rao criticized the Congress party for failing to address the concerns of auto drivers, despite promises made by Rahul Gandhi last year.

The situation highlights the challenges of balancing public welfare initiatives with the economic realities of those directly impacted. The BRS’s pledge to support auto drivers offers a potential solution, but the long-term impact remains to be seen.
