**Leicester, UK:** An Indian woman, Swetha Kothandan, has sparked widespread debate on social media after offering to work for free in the UK to avoid deportation. Kothandan, who holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leicester, shared her desperate situation on LinkedIn, revealing that despite tirelessly applying for visa-sponsored jobs since graduating in 2022, she hasn’t secured a position.
With her Graduate Visa set to expire in three months, Kothandan offered to work for free for a month, promising to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week. She even stated that her employer could fire her without notice or compensation if unhappy with her performance.
“Hire me for free for one month. If I don’t deliver, fire me on the spot, no questions asked. My Graduate Visa EXPIRES in 3 months,” she pleaded in her LinkedIn post, which has since gone viral.
The post has received mixed reactions, with some criticizing Kothandan for creating unrealistic expectations and jeopardizing the image of Indians abroad. Others empathized with her situation, highlighting the pressure of repaying student loans and avoiding returning to India with limited job prospects.
“Working for free thinking companies would not take advantage of it and creating this entire hell hole all together is crazy,” commented one user.
“I couldn’t imagine what’s going through her mind right now,” wrote another user. “In 30 days she has to get a job or else it’s back to India with a huge loan to repay.”
The debate highlights the difficult reality faced by many international students after completing their studies in the UK. While some succeed in securing employment and contribute to the economy, others find themselves facing deportation, leaving them with significant debt and limited opportunities.
