**New Delhi, November 5, 2024:** Acclaimed folk singer Sharda Sinha, known for her soulful renditions of Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi folk songs, passed away on Tuesday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. She was 72.
Sinha, a Padma Bhushan recipient, had been battling multiple myeloma since 2017 and was admitted to the intensive care unit of AIIMS in October. She was on ventilator support following a health complication related to the blood cancer.
The singer, who was fondly called ‘Bihar Kokila’, was known for her powerful voice and her ability to connect with audiences through her heartfelt performances. Her songs, including “Kartik Maas Ijoriya”, “Koyal Bin”, and “Chhathi Maiya Aayi Na Duaariya”, were popular across generations.
Sinha was also recognized for her contributions to Bollywood music, having lent her voice to songs in films like “Gangs of Wasseypur- II”, “Hum Aapke Hain Koun”, and “Maine Pyar Kiya”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over her passing, calling her an “irreparable loss to the music world.” He praised her for her popular folk songs in Maithili and Bhojpuri, particularly those dedicated to the Chhath festival.
