Tue Nov 05 08:20:18 UTC 2024: ## “Peanut’s Law” Proposed After Outrage Over Euthanized Squirrel

**Albany, NY** – Following the euthanization of Peanut, a beloved social media star squirrel, New York State Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz has introduced “Peanut’s Law: The Humane Animal Protection Act.” The law aims to prevent similar incidents by enacting a 72-hour waiting period before any sanctuary animal can be euthanized.

The bill was inspired by the public outcry over Peanut’s death, which occurred after the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) confiscated him from his owner, Mark Longo, citing concerns about rabies and illegal wildlife keeping. Peanut was euthanized for rabies testing after a person reported being bitten by him.

Blumencranz, who represents Assembly District 15 on Long Island, is calling for a more transparent process with an emergency appeal system for sanctuary operators to contest decisions about their animals. The law would also require a DEC review board to evaluate appeals within 48 hours, ensuring prompt attention to each case.

“This tragedy underscores the need for greater protection for our sanctuary animals,” said Blumencranz. “Peanut’s Law will ensure that animals receive due process and that their owners have a fair chance to fight any unfair treatment.”

The law would only allow euthanization to bypass the waiting period when a licensed veterinarian confirms a direct, immediate risk to public safety.

The incident has drawn national attention, with Elon Musk among those voicing concerns about government overreach. Longo, who has called the DEC’s actions a “disgrace,” says the state’s resources were wasted on killing a squirrel and a raccoon while neglecting crucial infrastructure repairs.

“We have resources to kill a raccoon and a squirrel, but we can’t fix the major bridges down the street?” he asked. “I am appalled.”

The proposed law has been met with support from animal welfare organizations and advocates who see it as a step towards better protection for sanctuary animals. The DEC has yet to comment on the bill.
