Mon Nov 04 16:10:57 UTC 2024: ## Supreme Court to Hear Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Disputes Over Krishna River Water Sharing

**HYDERABAD, INDIA (November 4, 2024):** The Supreme Court has ordered that both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh’s petitions regarding water sharing from the Krishna River be heard by the same bench. This follows a recent petition filed by Telangana against the Centre’s notification regarding the purview of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), and Andhra Pradesh’s earlier petition seeking to stop Telangana from generating power at the Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar, and Pulichintala projects.

Telangana argues that the KRMB’s authority should be limited to existing agreements and tribunal awards, as specified by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. They also highlight that no formal agreement exists between the two states regarding Krishna water sharing and project-specific allocation, which is currently under review by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II.

Andhra Pradesh, on the other hand, asserts that Telangana’s power generation activities violate the KWDT-I Award and existing operating protocols. They claim that the water released after power generation is wasted, affecting the needs of the Krishna Delta System, and are seeking for the central government to take control of the three reservoirs, potentially with police assistance.

Telangana has countered that Andhra Pradesh’s petition is inadmissible, considering the issue stems from a water dispute.

The Supreme Court bench will now hear both petitions, with the Chief Justice overseeing the matter, providing a consolidated platform for addressing the ongoing disputes related to the Krishna River water sharing between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
