Seattle, WA – The Seattle Public Schools (SPS) community is mourning the loss of music icon Quincy Jones, who passed away recently. Jones, a Garfield High School alumnus from 1947 to 1950, made a significant impact on the school’s music and arts programs.

During his time at Garfield, Jones actively participated in the Operetta, chorus, orchestra, and band. He even served as the student director of the swing band and Funfest. Though Jones went on to achieve global fame in music and entertainment, his ties to Seattle remained strong.

In 2008, Garfield High School honored Jones’ legacy by naming its performing arts center after him. The same year, he was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award at the Northwest African American Museum’s grand-opening gala, recognizing his immense contributions to the arts and culture.

The Quincy Jones Performing Arts Center continues to inspire Garfield students, showcasing his extraordinary journey to becoming a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and global music icon. The center hosts performances and programs that keep his spirit alive.

While the SPS community mourns his passing, Jones’ impact on Garfield, SPS, and the broader community will continue to inspire future generations of musicians, artists, and leaders. His legacy as a groundbreaking artist and a beloved member of the Seattle community will never be forgotten.
