Mon Nov 04 22:28:20 UTC 2024: ## Tensions Flare as Sikh Activists and Hindu Temple Clash in Brampton, Canada

**Brampton, Canada** – A violent clash erupted outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir temple in Brampton, Canada, during a visit by Indian diplomats ahead of Diwali celebrations, leading to the arrest of three individuals. The incident, which saw Sikh activists protesting with Khalistan flags, has further strained already tense relations between India and Canada.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the “deliberate attack” on the temple, blaming Sikh activists for the violence and stating that such “cowardly attempts to intimidate” consular staff will not weaken India’s resolve.

The Sikh group, Sikhs for Justice, countered by alleging that the protest turned violent after a group of “Indo-Canadian nationalists,” incited by Indian consulate officials, attacked the demonstrators. They claimed some attendees retreated into the temple and began throwing rocks and wielding iron rods.

Canadian authorities, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, condemned the violence and emphasized the right of Canadians to practice their faith freely and safely.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between India and Canada following Trudeau’s accusation that the Indian government assassinated Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistan activist. In October, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the country’s high commissioner, citing concerns about a covert network of violence operated by the Indian government in Canada.

India has accused Canada of ignoring the rise of Sikh separatism and failing to curb what it sees as violent rhetoric. The latest clash in Brampton further deepens the diplomatic rift and raises serious concerns about the safety and security of religious communities and diplomatic personnel in Canada.
