**CLEVELAND -** The Cleveland Cavaliers are off to a hot start, and while Donovan Mitchell’s game-winning shot against the Milwaukee Bucks was the highlight, it was Sam Merrill who truly sparked the team’s success.
Merrill, once known primarily as a sharpshooter, is showing a much more well-rounded game under head coach Kenny Atkinson. His ability to create plays, set screens, and even drive to the basket has made him a valuable asset beyond his scoring prowess.
“He’s on the scouting report, he’s on their board,” Atkinson said. “We can’t let him get any clean looks, and that takes a lot of energy, and it gives us space. I thought he did a great job.”
Merrill’s confidence in shooting under pressure is evident, leading the Cavs in attempts with a defender within two feet. He’s also showcasing his versatility by creating space for teammates with his ball-handling skills, reminiscent of his college days at Utah State.
“He’s really good at slipping out of stuff,” Atkinson explained. “He’ll just fly into a pick-and-roll, and he’ll slip out or set it if he’s got a weak defender.”
Beyond offense, Merrill’s defensive intensity has also caught attention. He’s not afraid to put his body on the line, taking charges and contributing to the team’s overall defensive effort.
“I look at him more as an overall player,” Atkinson said. “Sometimes I think shooters, guys like Sam, get labeled just as a shooter. I look at him more as an overall player.”
This expanded role has given Merrill a new sense of freedom and confidence. He’s no longer defined solely by his ability to make shots, and this has helped him unlock his full potential.
“It’s not just, ‘Oh, did he make a couple threes?'” Merrill said. “It’s, ‘OK, what am I doing as a screener, as a passer, and on the defensive end as well.'”
As the Cavaliers continue their journey towards the Eastern Conference playoffs, Sam Merrill’s evolution into a more complete player will be crucial. He’s a valuable asset, pushing the team to new heights with his basketball IQ, tenacity, and willingness to contribute in all facets of the game.
