**Melbourne, Australia:** Australia secured a nail-biting two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday. The match saw a thrilling finish as Australia chased down a modest target of 204 with just over 16 overs to spare.
Man of the Match, Mitchell Starc, starred with the ball, dismantling Pakistan’s top order early on. His impressive display in the powerplay laid the foundation for Australia’s victory.
“It’s always nice to start the summer off on a positive note with the group,” said Starc after the match. “Powerplay wickets are always nice. Positive effort with the ball and we got the job done.”
Pakistan struggled to adapt to the conditions, falling prey to Starc’s pace and movement. Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique were both dismissed early, while Babar Azam’s innings was cut short by Adam Zampa.
Despite a promising start, Australia’s chase was far from smooth. Matthew Short fell early, and Jake Fraser-McGurk’s promising innings was cut short. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis steadied the ship with an 85-run partnership, but Haris Rauf’s return to the side proved costly. Rauf’s pace and bounce claimed the wickets of Smith, Inglis, and Marnus Labuschagne in quick succession.
However, a crucial 10-run knock by Aaron Hardie and a calm, confident innings by captain Pat Cummins ultimately secured victory for Australia.
The second ODI in the series is scheduled for Wednesday at the MCG.
