Mon Nov 04 18:45:13 UTC 2024: ## Sun Unleashes Halloween Horror: X2.0 Solar Flare Erupts

On Halloween evening, the sun put on a terrifying show, unleashing a powerful X2.0 solar flare from a sunspot named AR 3878. The flare erupted at 5:20 PM EDT (2120 UTC) on October 31st.

Sunspots are dark areas on the sun’s surface, caused by intense magnetic fields originating from within our star. These magnetic fields can sometimes become unstable and release tremendous bursts of energy, known as solar flares. X-class flares are the most powerful type of solar flares, capable of causing radio blackouts and disrupting satellites.

While the Halloween flare was strong, scientists are still assessing its potential impact on Earth.
