Mon Nov 04 13:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Sabalenka Aims for Year-End Number One at Controversial WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia

Aryna Sabalenka, fresh off her Australian Open and US Open victories, is set to compete in the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with her sights set on securing the year-end number one ranking. However, the tournament has faced criticism due to its location in a country with a history of human rights concerns.

Sabalenka, the top seed, will face stiff competition from French Open champion Iga Swiatek, who aims to prevent her from claiming the top spot. Other contenders include Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova.

The decision to host the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia has drawn criticism from former Grand Slam champions Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, who view it as a setback for women’s tennis. Critics accuse Saudi Arabia of “sportswashing” – using sports to improve its international image despite its human rights record, which includes restrictions on women’s rights and the criminalization of homosexuality.

Despite the controversy, WTA CEO Portia Archer defended the decision, stating that the organization respects local customs while acknowledging potential disagreements with the country’s policies.

Players, including Coco Gauff, expressed their own concerns about competing in Saudi Arabia. Gauff acknowledged the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, while Sabalenka emphasized the importance of bringing tennis to all corners of the world.

The tournament, the first major tour-level event held in Saudi Arabia, begins on Saturday.
