Sun Nov 03 22:04:43 UTC 2024: ## Daylight Saving Time Ends This Weekend: Clocks Fall Back, Gain an Hour of Sleep
This Sunday, November 3rd, at 2 a.m. local time, most Americans will “fall back” an hour as daylight saving time ends. This means we’ll gain an extra hour of sleep and enjoy more daylight in the mornings.
The twice-annual time change, which shifts clocks forward an hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall, has been a source of debate for years. While many enjoy the extra daylight in the evenings during the summer months, the fall back brings about a shift in sleep patterns and can lead to a temporary decrease in productivity.
Not all states and territories participate in daylight saving time. Hawaii and Arizona, along with several U.S. territories, remain on standard time year-round.
The push to end the time change and make daylight saving time permanent has been gaining momentum. The Sunshine Protection Act, which would eliminate the need to “spring forward” and “fall back,” passed unanimously in the Senate in 2022. However, it has yet to be approved by the House of Representatives and signed into law.
Senator Marco Rubio recently renewed his call for the act’s passage, stating that the “ridiculous and antiquated practice” of changing clocks should be a thing of the past.
While the debate continues, for now, Americans will experience the traditional shift to standard time this weekend. So set your clocks back, enjoy the extra sleep, and prepare for the shorter days ahead.
