**Lansing, MI** – The Republican National Committee (RNC) has alleged a glitch in Michigan’s voting system led to thousands of duplicate ballots being generated, potentially allowing voters to cast multiple votes. However, Michigan election officials have clarified that the issue was a formatting error that was quickly identified and rectified, ensuring that only one vote per voter is counted.
Lara Trump, co-chair of the RNC, shared an image on social media that appeared to show one voter ID linked to various addresses, allowing the voter to cast a ballot 29 times. This sparked concerns among Republicans, who have been vocal about election integrity and have filed numerous lawsuits regarding the upcoming presidential election.
Cheri Hardmon, senior press secretary for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, confirmed that the issue was a formatting error in a report that lists voters who have cast ballots. This error caused the same voter’s ballot to appear on multiple lines, creating the illusion of multiple votes.
Michigan election officials have stressed that the Qualified Voter File, which contains voting records, allows only one ballot per voter. They have assured the public that the formatting error has been corrected and duplicate ballots will not be counted.
“Let this be clear: Voting records are public. Any non-citizen who attempts to vote fraudulently in Michigan will expose themselves to great risk and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said in a statement.
The incident follows recent allegations of voter fraud, with a non-U.S. citizen being charged with illegally registering and voting in the 2024 election.
The race between Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in Michigan is considered close. The RNC has been scrutinizing voting procedures in battleground states, while Democrats have accused them of laying the groundwork to dispute election results in the event of a Trump loss.
While the duplicate ballot issue has been resolved, it underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding election integrity and the importance of ensuring accurate and transparent voting processes.
