**KALPETTA, INDIA – NOVEMBER 4, 2024** – The Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, necessitated by the resignation of former MP Rahul Gandhi, is heating up as the campaigns enter their crucial phase. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress candidate and sister of the former MP, is leading the UDF campaign, while the LDF and NDA candidates are also actively engaging with voters.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with her brother Rahul Gandhi, began her second phase of campaigning in Mananthavady on Sunday. She has been holding public meetings and engaging with voters in smaller towns, focusing on issues like the urgent need for alternative roads and the lack of adequate medical facilities.
The Congress is also highlighting what they call the “anti-people” policies of both the Union and State governments, citing the delays in providing relief to landslide survivors and the alleged apathy towards setting up a medical college in the district.
Meanwhile, the LDF candidate, Sathyan Mokeri, has been focusing on door-to-door visits, listening to the concerns of tea estate workers regarding low wages and poor living conditions. He has also promised to raise the issue of human-wildlife conflicts, night traffic ban in Bandipur Tiger Reserve, and the need for alternative roads.
Navya Haridas, the NDA candidate, has also been campaigning vigorously, visiting remote tribal hamlets and landslide survivors. She has been critical of the state government’s delay in implementing rehabilitation projects for landslide victims.
As the campaign intensifies, key issues such as human-wildlife conflicts, the night traffic ban, inadequate medical facilities, the delayed Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line, and the demand for alternative roads are dominating the political discourse in Wayanad. The bypoll will be a crucial test for all three major alliances as they seek to gain a foothold in this strategically important constituency.
