The move, orchestrated by McLaren, saw Norris take the lead on lap 22, just before a Virtual Safety Car was deployed, allowing him to secure the win and close the championship gap to Max Verstappen to 44 points.
Piastri, who led the majority of the race, willingly handed over the lead to Norris as part of a pre-race strategy. The team’s calculated decision to switch drivers late in the race paid off, showcasing McLaren’s strong teamwork and strategic prowess.
“Not proud about it but we worked well as a team together, so I thank Oscar,” Norris said, acknowledging the strategic move. “We’ve done a great job as a team. Today was the result that we wanted.”
