**Bengaluru, November 4, 2024:** A joint operation by animal welfare organizations and the Bengaluru police has rescued 11 Shih Tzu puppies from a horrific puppy mill operation in Doddakallasandra, Konanakunte. The puppies, all suffering from various health issues including cataracts, tick fever, and anemia, were discovered living in cramped, unsanitary conditions.
The breeder, identified as a local water-can delivery businessman, was known for his cruel treatment of the animals, which included beatings, neglect, and confinement in tiny cages. According to Sanjana Narendra, manager of the Shwana Foundation, the breeder was caught red-handed after a tip-off from a concerned resident, who posed as a potential buyer. Videos documenting the abuse were provided to police, leading to the rescue operation.
The incident highlights the alarming reality of the unregulated pet breeding industry in India. Animal rescue groups report widespread abuse and neglect of animals used for breeding, including cases of dogs chained to poles, burned with hot oil, and forced to breed beyond their physical capacity. Experts point to the financial incentives and lack of oversight as driving factors for the cruelty.
The rescued puppies are currently receiving medical care at a veterinary hospital in Jayanagar. The breeder has been charged with animal cruelty and given an undertaking to cease breeding.
Animal welfare advocates are calling for increased awareness and action to curb the unethical practices in the pet breeding industry. They urge people to adopt instead of buying from breeders, emphasizing the abundance of abandoned and indigenous dogs in need of loving homes.
