CHICAGO – With just three days left until the 2024 presidential election, Chicagoans are making their voices heard at early voting sites across the city. Long lines have formed at several locations, with some voters waiting for hours to cast their ballots.
“We just need our life back. We need our rights back,” said Courtney Ward, who was among those waiting at the Loop supersite. “My youngest is a part of the LGBTQ community. It’s just too much. You can’t live in fear every day. I would stand here for days on end if I had to.”
The high turnout reflects the importance many voters place on this election, fueled by concerns about issues ranging from reproductive rights to LGBTQ+ rights to education.
“I feel like the Roe v. Wade was an attack on women,” said early voter Aschira White. “I think that every single person deserves to be treated as a human and those rights accessible to them, so I’m voting in accordance with that,” added Sebastian Klein.
While the presidential race draws the most attention, Chicago voters are also actively participating in local elections. Voters are choosing representatives for Cook County state’s attorney, congressional races, and Chicago’s first elected school board.
“We are going to have individuals that ensure we invest in our public school system,” said 26th Ward Alderperson Jessie Fuentes. “It doesn’t matter the color of your skin or the zip code you reside in; you deserve a world class education.”
With Election Day approaching, Monday is expected to be the busiest day for early voting. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by November 5th to be counted.
