Mon Nov 04 06:53:06 UTC 2024: ## Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Safety of Bihar Bridges After Multiple Collapses

**New Delhi, November 4, 2024** – The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the safety and longevity of bridges in Bihar, following a string of collapses in recent months. The plea, filed by advocate Brajesh Singh, calls for a structural audit of all bridges in the state and the establishment of an expert panel to assess their stability.

The PIL highlights the vulnerability of Bihar’s infrastructure, especially during the monsoon season when heavy rains and floods are common. Ten bridge collapses have been reported in the state between May and July, raising serious concerns about public safety.

The court has issued notices to the Bihar government, the National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI), and relevant state departments, seeking their responses on the matter. The PIL also calls for real-time monitoring of bridges based on guidelines set by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has already instructed state departments to conduct a survey of old bridges and prioritize repairs where necessary. The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the PIL underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for comprehensive action to ensure the safety of bridges and the people who rely on them.
