Sun Nov 03 05:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Kohli’s Shocking Run Out Casts Shadow Over India’s Day 1 in Mumbai

Virat Kohli’s much-anticipated return to Test cricket took a dramatic turn in the third Test against New Zealand, as he was run out for a mere four runs in the final over of Day 1. The dismissal, which came after Kohli’s late arrival at the crease, sent shockwaves through the Wankhede Stadium, leaving fans and commentators stunned.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, on commentary duty, expressed his disappointment at the “waste of a wicket,” calling it “harakiri” in the final minutes of the day. He questioned Kohli’s decision-making, adding, “Don’t know what was going through his mind.”

Adding to the misery, India had opted to send out nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj, instead of Kohli, after opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal. The strategy backfired spectacularly as Siraj was dismissed on the first ball he faced.

Kohli’s dismissal in his 200th Test innings and 600th international appearance marked the first time he had been run out in a home Test match.

Despite the dramatic end to Day 1, India fought back on Day 2, with a crucial stand between Rishabh Pant (60) and Shubman Gill (90) propelling them to a first innings lead. Washington Sundar’s quickfire cameo further boosted their score.

However, India’s innings ended on a similar note as Day 1, with Akash Deep getting run out due to another poor judgment while running between the wickets. Ajaz Patel was the star performer for New Zealand with a five-wicket haul.

The run out, coupled with the late-day decisions, has left India with a lot to ponder as they aim to level the series in the remaining two Tests.
