Sun Nov 03 13:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Long Lines for Early Voting Frustrate North Side Residents
**Chicago, IL** – North Side residents are facing long waits for early voting, with some reporting waits of up to three hours at locations like the Merlo Library in Lakeview. While lines are common during presidential elections, voters say they haven’t seen them this long in previous years.
“I arrived at 5 p.m. and wasn’t done until 7:30,” said Lakeview resident Cassie Branderhorst, who voted early at Merlo Library. “This is definitely the longest I’ve waited — by far.”
Max Bever, spokesperson for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, attributes the lines to the high turnout expected for a presidential election, as well as the popularity of certain voting locations. He suggests trying other locations with easier access to public transit or visiting the Downtown Supersite, which has 72 touchscreen machines and generally moves faster.
Voters expressed frustration with the long lines, with some missing work or appointments due to the wait. “I’ve got to be back for a call for work, so I’m probably not going to be able to do it today,” said Eli Otting, who was stuck in line at Merlo Library.
Despite the frustration, many voters were determined to cast their ballots. “With the very fabric of our democracy hanging in the balance, I was happy to wait,” said Branderhorst. “And also so grateful to the poll workers. It was such a long day for them too.”
The Board of Election Commissioners advises voters to be prepared for longer wait times due to the length of this year’s ballot, which includes numerous judicial candidates and retention questions. Voters should also be aware that they can vote at any early voting site in the city, regardless of their ward of residence.
