Sun Nov 03 07:13:28 UTC 2024: ## Paramilitary Forces Kill 12 in Darfur Shelling, Raise Fears of Escalation

**Port Sudan, Sudan – November 3, 2024:** At least 12 civilians were killed and five wounded in a shelling attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the north of Darfur, Sudan, on Saturday, according to local activists. The RSF, engaged in an ongoing war with the Sudanese army since April 2023, are reported to have taken three people captive after the attack near the town of Kutum.

Darfur’s Governor, Mini Minawi, who is aligned with the regular army, claims the RSF also burned down 20 villages in the area. The Sudanese army has been largely confined to El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, since the RSF’s takeover of the region last year.

The RSF’s siege of El-Fasher, a city of two million people, has begun to cause a humanitarian crisis, with famine already declared in the Zamzam camp for displaced people. The situation in Darfur has been a source of increasing concern for the UN, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently condemning the “nightmare of violence” in Sudan, highlighting the widespread atrocities and suffering of civilians.
