Fri Nov 01 19:15:53 UTC 2024: ## Roof Collapse at Novi Sad Train Station Kills 13, More Feared Dead
**NOVI SAD, Serbia** – A tragedy struck the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad on Friday, November 1st, when a concrete roof above the entrance of the railway station collapsed, killing at least 13 people. The death toll is expected to rise as more people are feared buried under the rubble.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed three people were rescued and hospitalized with serious injuries, but unfortunately, there were no signs of life from five others found under the debris. The rescue operation, described as “extremely hard,” is ongoing and expected to last for several hours.
Surveillance footage captured the moment the concrete canopy suddenly collapsed, despite a recent renovation of the station. The building was inaugurated by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orbán, just two years ago, marking a major stop on the planned Belgrade-Budapest fast train line.
Prime Minister Milos Vucevic declared November 2nd a day of mourning, calling the incident a “black Friday for us, for all of Serbia.” An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapse and any potential responsibility. While the Serbian state railway company confirmed the structure was not touched during the recent renovation, the roof was built in 1964.
As rescuers work tirelessly to locate any remaining survivors, residents of Novi Sad have gathered across from the station, lighting candles in remembrance of those lost in this devastating event.
