Sun Nov 03 11:03:53 UTC 2024: ## Puducherry Air Quality Suffers Major Spike on Deepavali

**Puducherry, November 03, 2024:** Deepavali celebrations in Puducherry have been marred by a significant spike in air pollution, according to data released by the Puducherry Pollution Control Committee (PPCC). The bursting of firecrackers resulted in alarming increases in particulate matter (PM) 10 and PM 2.5, exceeding prescribed limits and rendering air quality “very poor” in Puducherry and “moderate” in Karaikal.

The PPCC monitored air quality in various locations, including Reddiyarpalayam, Mudaliarpet, and Anna Nagar in Puducherry, and found PM 10 levels averaging 240 ug/m3 and PM 2.5 at 202 ug/m3. Similar trends were observed in Karaikal, with average PM 10 levels reaching 143 ug/m3 and PM 2.5 at 54 ug/m3. While levels of SO2 and NO2 remained within acceptable limits, the increase in particulate matter is a cause for concern.

The Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring station at Jawahar Nagar also recorded elevated levels of PM 10 at 238 ug/m3 and PM 2.5 at 207 ug/m3.

Noise pollution was also monitored in Puducherry and Karaikal. While noise levels decreased in Muthialpet and Mudaliarpet, they increased in Karaikal. This increase was attributed to firework displays, increased traffic, and other human activities.

The PPCC urges residents to be mindful of the impact of their actions on air quality, particularly during festive seasons. Reducing the use of firecrackers and promoting alternative forms of celebration can significantly contribute to healthier air quality and a cleaner environment.
