Sun Nov 03 15:46:07 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra Congress Demands Ban on Cotton Imports, Citing Farmer Distress

**MUMBAI, November 3, 2024:** Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately ban cotton imports, citing the distress of cotton farmers in the state. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Patole highlighted the large stock of unsold cotton held by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and the concerns of farmers over plummeting cotton prices.

Maharashtra, the second largest cotton producer in India, has seen its farmers struggle with low market prices, which are currently below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹7,122 per quintal. Patole argues that importing cotton, despite the existing stock, would further depress prices, benefiting traders at the expense of farmers.

“The decision to import cotton favors traders,” Patole stated, adding that “the Centre should prioritize farmers’ interests.” He also criticized the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, claiming it benefits insurance companies rather than farmers.

Patole pointed out the additional challenges faced by cotton farmers, including a 12-18% GST on agricultural equipment and damage caused by unseasonal rains. He urged the Centre to address these issues and ensure the welfare of farmers.

The Congress leader believes the Centre’s failure to curb cotton imports, despite the CCI’s substantial stock, demonstrates a lack of concern for the plight of Maharashtra’s hardworking farmers. He emphasized that the government should focus on safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods rather than traders’ profit margins.
