**GUWAHATI, November 02, 2024:** The Mizoram government has announced the introduction of special “red” ration cards for low-income families who are not covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 2,500 families, or around 100,000 people, who currently hold white ration cards but lack adequate means.
The move comes after a recent announcement by Mizoram’s Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister, B. Lalchhanzova, indicating a potential discontinuation of subsidies for white card beneficiaries.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma, while launching the convergence of the State Handholding Scheme and the National Livestock Mission on Friday, confirmed that the red cards will replace the white cards. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing essential food security to those in need.
To receive the red cards, beneficiaries are advised to approach their respective district civil supply officers. The government plans to involve local councils and NGOs in the selection process to ensure fairness and transparency in distribution.
