**Kasaragod, November 2, 2024:** A 38-year-old man, Sandeep, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening, becoming the first fatality from a firework accident at the Anjoottambalam Veerarkavu temple in Neeleswaram, Kerala. Sandeep, a resident of Choyangode, Karinathalam, had sustained over 40% burns in the incident on October 29 and was on ventilator support at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur.
The accident, which injured 154 individuals, has left 102 people hospitalized across Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Mangaluru. Police have filed a case against nine individuals, including the temple committee president and secretary, under the Explosive Substances Act and BNS. A special investigation team, led by Kanhangad DySP, has been formed to probe the incident.
Preliminary investigations suggest that fireworks were ignited near a storeroom containing a large amount of firecrackers, and that no safety measures were in place.
