**JERUSALEM** – Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that the Iron Beam directed-energy weapon system will be integrated into the country’s air defense network within the next year. This comes after the government signed a $536 million agreement with Rafael and Elbit Systems to accelerate the development of the laser defense system.
Iron Beam, developed by Rafael with the laser cannon provided by Elbit, will operate alongside the existing Iron Dome system. It will utilize a high-powered laser to intercept and disable a variety of threats, including rockets, mortars, drones, and cruise missiles. The laser system offers a significant economic advantage over traditional missile-based defenses, as the cost of interception is essentially the price of electricity.
“The combination between laser interception and missile interception will further tighten the defense envelope against rockets, missiles, drones, cruise missiles and other threats,” said Daniel Gold, head of military research.
While the Iron Beam system has proven its capabilities in tests and is entering operational development, it does have limitations. It is less effective than Iron Dome in dealing with large rocket barrages and its performance can be hampered by adverse weather conditions like clouds, rain, or sandstorms.
This development is crucial for Israel, which faces constant drone threats from Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, in addition to the numerous missile attacks from Hamas and other terror groups. The integration of Iron Beam into the air defense network is expected to bolster Israel’s ability to counter these threats and strengthen its national security.
