**Chennai, November 3, 2024:** The newly opened Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) in Kilambakkam has proven its mettle as a major transportation hub, handling a massive influx of passengers travelling to their hometowns for Deepavali.

According to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), over 5.25 lakh people travelled from KCBT to various districts across Tamil Nadu in the three days leading up to Deepavali (October 28-30). This surge in passenger traffic underscores KCBT’s emerging role as the new “Koyambedu,” catering primarily to travellers heading south.

The bustling terminus effectively distributes passenger flow away from the city’s other major bus stands, namely the Koyambedu Bus Terminus (CMBT) and the Madhavaram terminus. “Kilambakkam is the new Koyambedu but with improved amenities and features,” remarked an MTC official, citing the facility’s spacious layout and efficient bus movement.

The official also highlighted the seamless transition of buses from the parking area to the bus bay, with a waiting time of just 10 minutes. To accommodate the Deepavali rush, additional parking facilities were also arranged at Vandalur Zoo and Karasangal Sports Ground.

While the new terminus is attracting commuters, some have suggested improvements for an even smoother experience. Regular commuter T.K. Pandian advocated for point-to-point services from various locations within the city, particularly direct MTC services from areas like Anna Nagar. He also highlighted the need for a railway station in Kilambakkam, currently under construction, to further reduce travel time for commuters.

The implementation of battery-operated vehicles from GST Road to the bus terminus was also proposed to enhance accessibility. As KCBT continues to establish itself as a major transportation hub, further infrastructure development and connectivity improvements will be key in optimizing its potential and attracting even more passengers.
