**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – Indian conglomerate Adani has cut its cross-border electricity supply to Bangladesh by half, citing over $850 million in unpaid bills. The move has left Bangladesh facing power outages as officials scramble to increase domestic production.
The coal-fired Godda plant in India’s Jharkhand state, owned by Adani, normally provides 7-10% of Bangladesh’s baseload power demand. However, due to the mounting debt, Adani warned Bangladesh in September to settle its bills, calling the situation “unsustainable.”
Bangladesh, facing a dollar shortage, has struggled to make payments. While the nation has paid $97 million to Adani in October, the amount falls short of the total owed. The government is now working with Adani to reach a payment plan, aiming to gradually increase the size of monthly payments.
The power shortage has led to widespread load shedding, with Bangladesh facing a deficit of around 1,680 MW. Despite the shortfall, Adani’s Godda plant is only supplying 724 MW out of its 1,496 MW capacity.
Bangladesh also imports electricity from Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura, but these imports are insufficient to compensate for the cut from Adani. The power crisis comes at a time when Bangladesh is facing political instability following the toppling of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
