**Kolkata, India** – In a significant move towards universalizing education, the West Bengal government has announced that Class 5 will be introduced in an additional 2,335 primary schools from the upcoming academic year. This decision comes in accordance with the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act.
The move will bring the total number of primary schools offering Class 5 to around 20,335. The state government has directed the 2,335 newly designated schools to begin the necessary preparations immediately, aiming to introduce Class 5 by January 2025.
Despite this expansion, approximately 29,000 state-run and state-aided primary schools will remain without Class 5 for now. However, the government has assured that the implementation will be phased, and Class 5 will be introduced in these remaining schools gradually.
Prior to this change, primary schools in West Bengal only offered classes 1 to 4, while Class 5 was part of secondary education. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the quality of education and provide more comprehensive learning opportunities for children in the state.
