**New Delhi, India -** Bibek Debroy, the chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) and a distinguished economist, passed away on Friday morning. He was 69.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, praising Debroy as a “towering scholar” who left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. “Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more,” Modi wrote on X, adding that Debroy’s work on ancient texts made them accessible to the younger generation.
Debroy, a graduate of Presidency College, Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge, held positions at several esteemed institutions including Presidency College, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. He was also director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms.
Known for his contributions to economic policy and his work on Sanskrit texts, Debroy was a prominent figure in Indian intellectual circles. He published extensively on topics like economic reforms, governance, and the Indian railways. His translations of classic Sanskrit works, including the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, brought ancient wisdom to modern readers.
Debroy was also a member of NITI Aayog until June 2019 and served as a consulting/contributing editor for several newspapers. His passing is a significant loss to the Indian academic and economic community.
