Sun Nov 03 15:38:12 UTC 2024: ## Indian Power Exporters Pressure Bangladesh Over Unpaid Bills
**Dhaka, Bangladesh** – The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is facing mounting pressure from Indian power exporters over unpaid bills. Adani Power, one of the largest suppliers, has set a November 7 deadline for payment of $850 million in outstanding dues and a $170 million letter of credit. Adani, which supplies power from its 1,600 MW plant in Jharkhand, has already reduced supply to Bangladesh by shutting down one unit, leaving only a 500 MW output.
Other suppliers like SEIL Energy India and PTC are also facing delays in payments. SEIL Energy has received $30 million but still has an outstanding $180 million. While payments have slightly improved in recent weeks, sources say the overall amount of outstanding dues remains significant, threatening the economic viability of these projects.
Reports indicate that Adani Power has written to the BPDB demanding payment by October 30, threatening “remedial steps” to the power purchase agreement if the bills are not paid. While Adani has taken a firm stance, other suppliers like SEIL Energy and PTC are maintaining open communication with Dhaka, hoping for a resolution.
The situation highlights the growing strain on Bangladesh’s electricity grid as it struggles to meet the country’s increasing energy demands. The BPDB’s delayed payments raise concerns about its ability to fulfill its financial obligations to its international suppliers, potentially impacting future energy imports.
