London – Kemi Badenoch, a 44-year-old woman of Nigerian descent, has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party in the UK. This makes her the first Black woman to hold the position.

The election follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who stepped down after the Conservatives faced a significant loss in the general election in July. A three-month selection process was held to choose the new leader.

Badenoch will now also become the Leader of the Opposition in the British Parliament. Former Prime Minister Sunak has offered his congratulations.
