**MUMBAI, INDIA –** A heated exchange between politicians in Maharashtra has escalated into a major controversy after Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant used derogatory language towards a female candidate.
Sawant, a member of the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena, called Shaina NC, a candidate for the Eknath Shinde-led faction, “imported maal” (imported goods) on Friday. Shaina NC, a former BJP leader, is contesting the upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls as the Mumbadevi candidate for the Shinde faction, an ally of her former party.
Sawant’s remarks sparked immediate outrage, with many condemning his sexist language and calling for an apology. Shaina NC hit back, calling Sawant’s statement a “reflection of his mentality” and vowing that people would “teach” him and his party a “lesson.”
Sawant later attempted to downplay the controversy, claiming his comments were taken out of context and were meant to highlight the local versus outsider aspect of the Mumbadevi constituency. However, his explanation was met with further criticism, with many pointing out that his initial remarks were undeniably offensive.
The incident has highlighted the prevalent use of sexist language in Indian politics and has drawn attention to the need for greater sensitivity and respect towards women in public life. The Maharashtra assembly elections will be held on November 20, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23.
