**MUMBAI, INDIA:** A thrilling first day of the third and final Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium saw a mixed bag of fortunes for the hosts. While Ravindra Jadeja starred with a five-wicket haul to bowl out New Zealand for 235, India’s batting faltered in reply, ending the day at 86/4, trailing by 149 runs.

Jadeja’s 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket was instrumental in curbing New Zealand’s momentum after they opted to bat first. Daryl Mitchell top-scored for the visitors with a commendable 82, while Will Young contributed 71 runs. However, other Kiwi batsmen failed to capitalize on a good start, leaving the task to Mitchell and Young to salvage the innings.

India’s comeback was further bolstered by Washington Sundar, who claimed four wickets.

Unfortunately for India, their batting performance mirrored their inconsistent run in the series. Virat Kohli, who has been struggling for form, was once again dismissed early, this time run out for a paltry score. India, at one point, were comfortably placed at 78/1 but lost three wickets in a crucial eight-ball span, handing the advantage back to New Zealand. Shubman Gill (31 not out) and Rishabh Pant (1 not out) will have the responsibility of rebuilding the Indian innings on Day 2.

The match remains keenly contested, with New Zealand taking a significant lead on Day 1. It will be fascinating to see how India respond and whether they can claw their way back into the game on Day 2.
