**Mumbai, India:** Indian batsman Shubman Gill narrowly missed out on a well-deserved century on Saturday, falling just short on 90 runs in the second day of the first Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium. Despite the disappointment, Gill’s knock saw him surpass the 800-run mark for the calendar year in Test cricket.
Gill came to the crease early, replacing Rohit Sharma in the seventh over. He began cautiously before building a strong partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, India’s strong start of 78-1 quickly turned precarious, ending the day at 84-4.
The next morning, Gill and Rishabh Pant took charge, with Pant hitting three boundaries off Ajaz Patel. Gill reached his half-century, his seventh in Test cricket, and played a crucial role in steering India towards lunch at 195-5.
Gill continued to hold his own in the second session, surviving a run-out scare and hitting two boundaries off Glenn Phillips to reach the 80s. However, Ajaz Patel eventually dismissed him for 90, caught by Daryl Mitchell at slip.
Gill’s innings, spanning 146 balls with 7 boundaries and a six, took his Test tally for the year to 805 runs at an average of 53.66. While missing out on a century, Gill’s consistent performance continues to highlight his growing stature in Test cricket.
