**New Delhi:** The mastermind behind the murder of a prominent doctor in South Delhi’s Jangpura has been arrested after a 1,600km chase by police to the India-Nepal border. Vishnuswaroop Shahi, who had been on the run since May, was apprehended this morning near the border, having changed his identity multiple times and using numerous mobile phones and SIM cards to evade capture.

Shahi, who was carrying the fake identity of ‘Gagan Oli’ at the time of his arrest, had previously changed his name six times, using aliases such as Vishnu Swaroop Shahi, Shakti Sai, Satya Sai, Surya Prakash Shahi, and Krishna Shahi. He also used fake identity documents throughout his escape.

The 63-year-old doctor, Yogesh Chandra Paul, was found murdered in his Jangpura home in May, with signs of vandalism indicating robbery. The police, led by Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Sen, identified Shahi as the mastermind after reviewing CCTV footage and call records.

Police investigation revealed that Shahi, along with his accomplices, targeted the doctor’s house based on information provided by the house help, Basanti. The mastermind planned the murder and robbery, using his accomplices Bhim Jora and others to execute the plan. Shahi even involved his own wife in the conspiracy.

The police had been tracking Shahi through his mobile phone activity, discovering he had changed eight phones and 20 SIM cards in an attempt to disappear. He was eventually located hiding in Himachal Pradesh’s Suket Valley, but fled to Dehradun upon the police’s arrival. Shahi then took a bus towards the India-Nepal border, prompting a 24-hour, 1600km chase by the police, who finally caught him this morning.

Shahi, who has a criminal history with arrests in 2018 and 2020, looted Rs 40,000 and 13 grams of gold from the doctor’s house. His wife and daughter reside in Solan, Himachal Pradesh.

The police investigation is ongoing, with several other suspects in custody. The arrest of the mastermind provides closure in the case and underlines the dedication of the police in bringing criminals to justice.
