Fri Nov 01 11:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Clocks Fall Back This Weekend: Daylight Saving Time Ends on Sunday, November 3rd
This Sunday, November 3rd, marks the end of Daylight Saving Time, meaning we’ll be “falling back” an hour. At 2:00 AM local time, clocks will be set back to 1:00 AM, providing more daylight in the morning.
While many Americans may welcome the extra hour of sleep, the twice-annual time change can cause confusion and disruptions to schedules for people and pets.
Daylight Saving Time, despite its name, was not created to help farmers. It was first used in 1908 by a few Canadians in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and popularized by Germany during World War I to conserve coal. It was officially adopted as a national standard in the U.S. in 1966 under President Lyndon B. Johnson to save energy.
Currently, Hawaii and Arizona are the only states that don’t observe Daylight Saving Time, along with various U.S. territories. The U.S. Department of Transportation oversees all time zones and daylight saving time, as consistent time standards are crucial for transportation.
There’s been a growing push to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, with the Sunshine Protection Act passing unanimously in the Senate in 2022. However, the bill stalled in the House of Representatives, and the bi-annual clock change remains. At least 29 states have introduced legislation to support year-round Daylight Saving Time, with seven states already approving legislation.
While the future of Daylight Saving Time remains uncertain, it is expected to resume again on Sunday, March 9, 2025, and end on Sunday, November 2, 2025.
Don’t forget to adjust your clocks and change the batteries in your smoke alarm this weekend. And while you’re at it, be mindful of the potential disruptions to your sleep schedule and be kind to your furry friends who may also be affected by the time change.
