**New York, NY** – Mayor Eric Adams has announced the cancellation of the one-day school week prior to the Christmas vacation, giving students an extra day of holiday cheer. The decision comes after a 12-year-old Brooklyn boy, Isaac, launched a Change.org petition urging for the change.
Isaac, a 7th grader, argued that the unusual scheduling, with Christmas Eve falling on a Tuesday, would result in low attendance and disrupt holiday plans for families.
“Kids whose families have travel plans will have to change their plans or be marked absent,” Isaac wrote in his petition, which garnered over 22,000 signatures. “Kids and teachers will feel annoyed, and kids won’t get to learn anything or have a party with all of their friends (because of the low attendance).”
The mayor’s office confirmed that the decision was made to ensure a more enjoyable holiday break for both students and teachers. “We know that a one-day week would not be well attended — so this just makes good sense,” said Adams. “Our children’s education will not be short-changed, so we will still maintain the required 180 days of instruction.”
The new schedule will see winter break begin on December 23rd, with students returning to classes on January 2nd.
