**KOCHI:** Renowned film editor Nishad Yusuf (43), known for his work on blockbuster films like “Thallumala” and “Operation Java,” was found dead in his Kochi apartment on Wednesday morning. The cause of death is suspected to be suicide, though the police are investigating the matter.
Yusuf was discovered hanging from a fan in his bedroom by his wife, Shifa. After repeated attempts to reach him, she alerted the police who forced entry into the room at 3 am. Yusuf was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead.
The talented editor had returned to Kochi around 2.30 am after completing editing work for a Tamil film in Chennai. After showering, he entered his room and locked the door from inside, prompting his wife’s concern.
Yusuf, a state award winner, had established himself as a prominent figure in the Malayalam film industry. He began his career as a video editor on a private channel before transitioning to television series. His foray into films came in 2011 with director Vinayan’s “Raghuvinte Swantham Raziya.” He went on to edit critically acclaimed films like “One,” “Chaveer,” “Unda,” “Saudi Vellakka,” and “Operation Java.”
He received the prestigious Kerala State Film Award for Best Editor in 2022 for his work on “Thallumala” and also won the Film Critics Award for “Operation Java.” Yusuf had recently completed editing for the upcoming Malayalam film “Bazooka” starring Mammootty and the highly anticipated Tamil film “Kanguva” starring Suriya.
Ernakulam South Police have registered a case of unnatural death. Following an autopsy, Yusuf’s body was transported to his hometown in Haripad, where he was laid to rest at the Ayaparampu mosque after a public homage ceremony at the Ayaparampu School where he had received his education.
Yusuf is survived by his parents Yusuf and Laila and his children Muhammad Fidan and Leah Sira. The film industry is mourning the loss of this talented and highly respected editor.
