Fri Nov 01 12:59:01 UTC 2024: ## Mumbaikar at Heart, Ajaz Patel Returns to Wankhede for a Special Homecoming
**MUMBAI -** New Zealand’s left-arm spinner, Ajaz Patel, is back in the city where he made history, the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Born and raised in Mumbai before emigrating to New Zealand with his family in 1996, Patel is thrilled to be playing in the city he considers home, despite representing the Black Caps.
Patel’s return to the Wankhede comes three years after his legendary 10-wicket haul in 2021. “It’s certainly emotional,” Patel shared, expressing his gratitude to the BCCI for scheduling a Test match in Mumbai. “To be honest, after my 10-wicket haul, I wasn’t sure if I’d get another opportunity to play here again.”
Despite the historic feat, Patel’s cricketing journey has not been without its challenges. He endured a period of limited opportunities, most notably missing a Test match at home since February 2020. “I don’t think life has changed too much after the 10-fer,” he admitted, “but every time you get an opportunity to play for your nation, it’s very special.”
While Patel’s performance in the current series against India has been modest – just four wickets in two outings – he remains focused on contributing to his team’s success. “It’s about the role you’re playing for the team. Mitch (Santner) was bowling exceptionally well, so I was focusing on restricting runs and taking wickets when possible,” he explained.
With family and friends from Mumbai cheering him on, Patel is determined to make his homecoming a memorable one. The city where his cricketing journey began, the Wankhede Stadium holds a special place in his heart, and Patel hopes to leave his mark on the pitch once again.
