**New York, NY** – Award-winning actress Rosie Perez has landed a pivotal role in Apple TV+’s upcoming psychological thriller “Before,” starring Billy Crystal. Originally written for someone much younger, Perez fought for the role of Denise, Noah’s foster mother, drawing from her own deeply personal experience with foster care and abuse.

Perez, known for her outspoken advocacy for social justice, revealed that she initially turned down a different role offered by Crystal, feeling strongly that the character of Denise resonated with her own life. “I grew up in and out of group homes and foster care,” she shared, referencing her memoir, “Handbook for an Unpredictable Life,” which detailed her own struggles.

During her audition, Perez implored Crystal to ensure whoever played Denise would approach the role with empathy and understanding. Crystal, initially envisioning Perez for a different character, was moved by her passionate plea and ultimately cast her as Denise.

The filming process proved emotionally challenging for Perez, who admitted to experiencing nightmares and gaining weight as she delved into the complex emotions of the character. “It was crazy,” she revealed. “I would get home from set and just be like, ‘Ahhh.'”

One particularly difficult scene involved Denise explaining her motivations for taking in Noah. “Because of my background, that was so hard for me to deliver that line,” shared Perez. “I kept saying, ‘I’m so sorry I’m messing up, I’m so sorry.'” Crystal, recognizing her emotional distress, offered comfort and support, allowing Perez to deliver the poignant line with raw authenticity.

Perez expressed gratitude for Crystal’s professionalism and collaborative spirit on set. “I have a pet peeve of actors not coming prepared,” she said. “We are so fortunate to do this and you have the nerve not to come prepared and waste everybody’s time – especially mine!”

“Before,” which follows a child psychiatrist dealing with his own grief while navigating the complexities of a troubled young boy’s life, premieres on Apple TV+ on October 25th.
