Fri Nov 01 14:53:37 UTC 2024: ## Delhi’s Diwali Air Quality Worst in Three Years, But Strong Winds Averted Severe Levels

**New Delhi:** This year’s Diwali saw the worst air quality in Delhi in three years, with stubble burning, fireworks, and seasonal factors contributing to the deterioration. While air quality index (AQI) levels dipped below those of the past two years, strong winds prevented the AQI from reaching the severe category.

The rise in stubble burning incidents played a significant role in the pollution spike. Despite appeals and strict measures, people continued to indulge in firework displays, further exacerbating the situation.

Despite the alarming levels, the Delhi government is taking action. The Environment Minister recently flagged off 200 mobile anti-smog guns to combat air pollution.

This year, Delhi also experienced record-breaking heat in October, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, a phenomenon not seen in 73 years.

The situation highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of pollution control measures, particularly focusing on curbing stubble burning and promoting sustainable Diwali celebrations.
