**New Delhi, India:** Eminent economist and chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council, Bibek Debroy, passed away on Friday at the age of 69. Debroy, widely recognized for his significant contributions to shaping Indian economic policies, left an indelible mark on the nation’s intellectual landscape.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his grief on social media, calling Debroy a “towering scholar” well-versed in diverse fields including economics, history, culture, politics, and spirituality. He highlighted Debroy’s work in making ancient texts accessible to younger generations.

Debroy, a Padma Shri recipient, was a distinguished academician, serving as chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune and a member of NITI Aayog until June 2019. He authored and edited numerous books and articles, and contributed as an editor for multiple newspapers.

His expertise in macroeconomics and public finance led him to write extensively on economic reform, governance, and railways. He was also known for his translations of classical Sanskrit texts, including the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita.

Debroy began his academic career at Presidency College in Kolkata and later worked at the Gokhale Institute and the Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi. He held various positions within the Ministry of Finance, UNDP, and other prestigious institutions before joining the Economic Advisory Council under Prime Minister Modi.

His loss is deeply mourned by the academic, economic, and political communities across India. Debroy’s legacy as a scholar, economist, and public servant will continue to inspire generations to come.
