Fri Nov 01 12:47:19 UTC 2024: ## Prominent Economist and PMEAC Chairman Bibek Debroy Passes Away

New Delhi, November 1, 2024 – Renowned economist and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC), Bibek Debroy, passed away on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Debroy a “great scholar.”

Debroy held prominent positions in the Modi government since its formation in 2014. He also chaired committees related to railways and infrastructure. While he was known for his expertise, Debroy was also a controversial figure. His outspoken views often put the government in a tight spot, forcing it to distance itself from his statements.

In 2017, Debroy proposed the imposition of income tax on agricultural income to increase the number of taxpayers in India. This sparked outrage, with the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley having to clarify that there were no plans for such a move.

In August 2023, Debroy’s article advocating for a new constitution sparked a political firestorm. The opposition accused the government of trying to change the constitution, raising concerns about its safety. The PMEAC distanced itself from Debroy’s statement, clarifying that it was his personal opinion.

Debroy also advocated for a single Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate, arguing that multiple rates were detrimental to the government. He believed that a single rate would simplify the system.

Bibek Debroy’s passing is a significant loss to the Indian economic and political landscape. He will be remembered for his contributions to the field of economics and his unwavering belief in bold reform initiatives.
